At the heart of every thriving family business is a delicate balance between business success and family unity. True family business success extends far beyond financial sustainability. It embodies harmonious inter-generational relationships, effective governance, and a deep respect for the values and legacy that have shaped the business over time.
Inspired by my Nuffield Farming Scholarship, I discovered that a key tool in building this kind of enduring success is the Family Charter. First introduced to me by farming families in New Zealand, I soon learned that this concept is embraced by the many successful family businesses around the world. A Family Charter helps bring clarity, communication, and cohesion - guiding families through the complex dynamics of business and personal relationships.
During my travels, a quote resonated deeply with me: “To know and not to do, is really not to know.” This wisdom, alongside the valuable insights gained from global leaders in family businesses, inspired me to take action. Simply knowing how crucial a Family Charter is isn’t enough; it must be put into practice.
That’s why I created a course to guide families in crafting their own Family Charter - a process that strengthens relationships, builds understanding, and creates a lasting legacy. Understanding that family dynamics can be sensitive, this course is designed to be inclusive, allowing families to work through it at their own pace, fostering an environment where everyone can feel proud of the future they are building together.
My goal is simple: to help families achieve long-lasting success by blending strong business practices with family unity—creating a legacy that will stand the test of time.
Open and honest communication is the foundation of any strong family business. I believe that when family members feel truly heard and understood, it creates a safe space for opinions, concerns, and aspirations to be shared freely. This kind of openness isn't just good for business—it's essential for building trust and harmony within the family.
My mission is simple: To create lasting relationships, not just transactions. I’m passionate about guiding families through the complexities of working together, ensuring that everyone feels supported, valued, and part of something bigger.
A Family Charter is a formal, written document designed to establish a clear set of rules for families in business. It serves as both a roadmap for the future direction of your family enterprise and a powerful tool to unite family members with a shared vision. By fostering honest, open, and fair communication, a Family Charter strengthens trust and alignment across generations.
I work closely with families to create the safe and respectful environment needed to develop this essential document. Together, we will craft a living Family Charter that not only reflects your family's values but also brings everyone together, setting the foundation for long-term success. I am here to guide you through the process, ensuring that each voice is heard and that the path forward is clear for everyone.
Born and raised in a family farming business in South Lincolnshire, my roots are deeply connected to the land and the people who work it. After graduating from Wye College, Imperial UCL, with a degree in Agribusiness Management, I returned to the family farm, believing that understanding the numbers was the key to success. But I quickly realised that farming is about so much more - it's about relationships, especially within the family.
For over 20 years, I struggled with the complexities of family dynamics, learning first hand how challenging it can be. The turning point in my journey came when I was awarded a Nuffield Farming Scholarship, which allowed me to travel the world in search of how the most successful families in business thrive. While my own family relationships reached a point beyond repair, my passion for helping others only grew stronger.
Now, I dedicate my spare time to empowering other families in business, sharing what I’ve learned and providing tools that foster communication, trust, and unity. I believe in acting early, in guiding families to protect their legacy and nurture their relationships before it's too late.
I enjoy helping families grow stronger together, with support along the way. Let’s start a conversation about how we can build a foundation for long-term success - one that keeps your family united and your legacy secure for generations to come.
With only 13% of family businesses surviving into the third generation, many families face growing tensions as the business expands and relationships become strained. Without clear rules, misunderstandings can escalate, threatening both the family and the business. A Family Charter provides a framework that you and your family create together - an agreement that sets out how decisions are made, roles are defined, and conflicts are resolved, bringing clarity and stability to secure long-term harmony.
I've seen families fall apart because they avoided having the sometimes difficult conversations, hoping things would resolve themselves. Sadly, many found their relationships deteriorated beyond repair, impacting both their family life and the success of the business. Starting this process, while tough, can be the key to avoiding such devastating outcomes.
I have designed an inclusive and interactive course for families who wish to create a Family Charter - a guiding document that captures their shared values, vision, mission, and goals. The Family Charter serves as a blueprint for decision-making, fostering unity, and ensuring that the family’s legacy is preserved for generations. Through this course, families will engage in reflective discussions, collaborative activities, and strategic planning to craft a meaningful and lasting Family Charter.
